We are Iona Academy situated in the st. Raphael’s area of Eastern Ontario. Today we set up our Malaise Trap! We had a few minor setbacks because it was raining while we were setting up. The location we chose to set up was in an open field along the forest edge. It was also near a pond, so we could attract insects from the water, field and forest. It was a very chilly day as it was only 12 degrees Celsius, so not many insects were caught. We hope the weather clears up because we are very excited to be part of this project and hope to catch more insects!–grade 7 students

Don’t touch!
Some people just don’t have any respect for Science! Over the weekend some people tampered with our trap. They ripped pegs out of the ground and the back was leaning a bit. The caution tape was also ripped off, but the damage was minor and some of us went over and fixed it over the weekend.
Today we attached the collection vessel, so now we’re ready to go. We’re excited to watch over it for the next couple of weeks. We hope to catch lots of cool insects!

It’s a trap!
“It’s a trap!”…a Malaise trap. We just found the perfect spot to deploy our trap. We are still a little worried that people might tamper with it, but we know that there are lots of bugs there, since they were crawling all over our teacher this morning. We can’t wait to launch on Monday.

Iona Academy is Ready! We received our trap!
This is one of the location where we will post our trap. Iona Academy has a beautiful pond in our backyard. This is where we studied our ecosystems this fall. We cannot wait to start and set up our Trap! We are so happy it is here!!! The snow is almost gone here in Eastern Ontario. Our forest only has a few patches of snow!!! lol
The Snow is Melting!!!
We are excited to see the sunshine!! This means that the snow is melting and we will soon need to select an appropriate location for our Malaise trap!
So Much Snow!
Hello Everyone!
We are very excited to take part in the Malaise Trap Program. We have a great deal of snow here on Prince Edward Island with approximately 20-25 cm more coming on Sunday! We have an idea where our perfect location is but we are waiting for some of the snow to melt before we post a picture!
Talk to you soon,

Our Iona Academy grade 7 little scientists are ready for spring! We cannot wait to explore our backyard world of biodiversity. We can smell spring coming 🙂
M.C. Knoll is ready… if only the weather was.
It’s snowing and cold outside but that won’t stop the M.C. Knoll grade 5 students from doing a walk-about next week to hunt for the perfect place to set-up the Malaise trap. We look forward to blogging our experiences and discoveries!
