Students are introduced to the life of a biologist and the exciting science of <a href=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/discover\/dna-barcoding\/\" target=\"_blank\">DNA barcoding<\/a> through comprehensive lesson plans which address multiple specific expectations across elementary and secondary curricula.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Educational value:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4509 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-1.jpg\" alt=\"SMTP-1\" width=\"306\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-1.jpg 667w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-1-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/>The School Malaise Trap Program\u00a0runs\u00a0during the spring and fall of each year. Each participating school receives a program package, educational materials, and a Malaise trap to collect insects in their schoolyard for a specified two-week period. The specimens are sent back to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biodiversitygenomics.net\">Centre for Biodiversity Genomics<\/a>\u00a0where they are identified through DNA barcoding, and a report package of the results is sent to each school.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Each school receives\u2026.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>An overall program report.<\/li>\n<li>A list of the species collected in their schoolyard.<\/li>\n<li>An image library of the species collected in their schoolyard.<\/li>\n<li>A pie chart showing the different types of specimens collected in their schoolyard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the specimen data from every school and every program are uploaded to <a href=\"http:\/\/boldsystems.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">BOLD<\/a> and are accessible to the public.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4515 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/report.jpg\" alt=\"report\" width=\"1520\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/report.jpg 1520w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/report-300x76.jpg 300w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/report-768x194.jpg 768w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/report-1024x258.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1520px) 100vw, 1520px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Experience<\/strong><strong> citizen science!<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4510 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-2.jpg\" alt=\"SMTP-2\" width=\"298\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-2.jpg 667w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-2-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/>Through hands-on research and inquiry-based learning, the School Malaise Trap Program encourages\u00a0students to become actively engaged citizen scientists \u2013 their efforts contribute\u00a0valuable data to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ibol.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Barcode of Life<\/a>\u00a0project &#8211; the largest biodiversity genomics initiative ever undertaken!<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Scientific findings associated with the School Malaise Trap Program:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In the past three years, over <strong>300\u00a0schools<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>15,000 students<\/strong> have contributed <strong>85,000 specimens,<\/strong> representing <strong>8,119\u00a0different species,<\/strong> to BOLD (BIO\u2019s online barcode reference library). <strong>1,288<\/strong>\u00a0of these species were <strong>NEW<\/strong> to BOLD, having never been DNA barcoded before!<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Program demand:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4513 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-chart.jpg\" alt=\"SMTP-chart\" width=\"303\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-chart.jpg 846w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-chart-300x251.jpg 300w, http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/SMTP-chart-768x643.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/>Although interest in the School Malaise Trap Program has grown rapidly since it began, our capacity remains unchanged. Each year we strive to involve as many schools as CBG\u2019s resources allow.
