We’re very excited here at New Horizons to participate in the Malaise Trap program! We’ve had a couple of snow-free weeks here in the Capital Region of Alberta, so hopefully we’ll see a few bugs next week!

Spruce View Trap is Deployed!
Spruce View School’s (Spruce View, Alberta) Biology 20 class set up our Malaise Trap this morning. Cold and windy, but at least we know it is secure!
First Day!
We’ll be setting up the trap today. Our whole class is so excited to be part of this program. We’ll keep you posted with pictures soon.

Wellington Hall Academy is Getting Ready!
The grade 5/6 class has been exploring areas to set the Malaise Trap. Our school is located in one of the buildings at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre in Guelph and we are lucky to have access to 240 hectares of land!
We scouted some areas and chose a location that would be close to the school so we can easily keep an eye on the trap. It is in an area that the students think will have a high insect biodiversity.
We are looking forward to deploying the Malaise Trap on Monday and we are glad the snow is gone!
Valley Elementary Students Search for Ideal Location
47 enthusiastic grade four students from Valley Elementary searched the school property to find a feasible location for their Malaise trap. However, with snow on the ground and a forecast for possible flurries and temperatures below freezing on Sunday, it may be a challenge to find the ideal spot!
BIO Has Set Up Their Malaise Trap!
Hello All,
We’ve had some lovely weather here in Guelph, ON over the past week and we thought that this would be a good time to set up our Malaise trap here at BIO which we use for spring/summer/fall educational programming!
You can already see that the attached ethanol bottle (see the dark and cloudy areas) has collected a few insects (mostly flies).
However, there are more than just flies out there! Over the weekend, one of our E&O team members spotted a Leaf-footed bug on her balcony.
Reminder: Trap deployment is Monday, April 20th. Now would be a great time to finalize the location of your Malaise Trap. You may also wish to set up your Malaise trap on Friday, April 17th so that come Monday morning, all you will have to do is screw in the week 1 ethanol bottle and make trap observations.
We look forward to seeing what you collect!
Monarch Park Collegiate
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in a study that explores various types of insects and their DNA. As of today, we walked around the school looking for an appropriate location to set up our trap. We walked around the school grounds in search of a place that would be private, undisturbed and that would allow the maximum amount of insects to come to be collected. There were various locations that would fit under our qualifications, but we thought that in the end our library’s courtyard would be the best choice.

Wellington Hall Students are Excited to Get Started!
The grade 5/6 students at Wellington Hall Academy are excited to begin the Malaise Trap process! If only Mother Nature would cooperate and the snow would stop!
The students are curious to see if there are any new species of insects to be found on the grounds.
It’s here!!!!!!
Our Malaise trap is finally here at Shoal Lake School!!! Soon we will be able to test out this amazing project. We are happy to be a part of this program. It arrived on April 6/2015 and we can’t wait to put it up on the 20th. Our class is currently brainstorming ideas to inform the community and our school about this research program.
Cameron School Students are Excited
It is spring here in Burnaby B.C. The insects are arriving along with the tulips and cherry blossoms. Our grade 5/6 has just started a unit on Diversity of Life and are looking forward to catching and viewing insects. Today we picked a site for our trap. I originally had no idea it was going to be so large (I guess I didn’t do my research properly!). We are a little concerned that people will destroy it, as our school is in a urban setting surrounded by high-rises and a mall. We hope that it will be ok. We will educate all our students and ask that they let all our neighbours know that we are budding scientists and we need their help! We also just started blogging so we have lots to celebrate. Looking forward to it.
