Week 2 : Tuesday , April 28th

Daily Temperature

  • 7 Degrees

Cloud coverage

  • mostly sunny

Catch Volume  ( How many bugs were found)

  • Today we discovered 62! bugs in our malaise trap in the court yard.

Notes( Trap Disturbances)

  • Due to the warmer weather mid day we discovered a lot more insects in our Malaise trap. We are starting to notice a pattern in our data with regards to the warmer weather and bug activity. When the weather is warmer we collect more bugs and when it is colder outside it seems as if the bugs don’t come outside as much so there is no bug activity or very little if there is any.

Real Science Is Worth It

Marshall here from SilverHeights P.S and today it was a lousy 60% cloud coverage and a temperature of 17 degrees. We were happy to take a semi-selfie with our trap. we caught around 20 to 30 bugs in our trap but the last 2 days there was a little spider that would build a web right around the hole of the trap.  (without hurting the spider) we have to remove the web with a stick. Well hope to post soon with a picture of the spider. And I also used all my time to post this, Marshall.

Coquitlam Climate – Wikipedia

Geography/Nearby ecosystems

The climate in Port Coquitlam is a maritime temperate climate, which is characterized by frequent precipitation and mild temperatures. It rained periodically during our process of setting up the malaise trap.

There are two rivers near our school, which are the Pitt River and the Fraser River, with the former being the closest. There is also a patch of temperate rainforest near the trap.Weather

The above image was taken from our classroom’s window. You can see that there are numerous large trees nearby, and that the weather is overcast.

No luck in Winnipeg!

Thursday morning, the 6M class got to visit the trap for their first time. With a high of 8°C that day, we didn’t expect many findings but they were happy to be going outside to collect some data. Here’s what they had to say:

Oh come on! We didn’t catch any bugs in our malaise trap. I t was our first visit, so you couldn’t expect a lot of bugs. This morning it was -5°C. I wish we had found a least something!

Today was the first time we went to see the trap. I thought we were going to catch a lot of insects but we didn’t catch anything.
-Jamal 6M

Today for the first time, my class went to see the trap. I personally think the trap is in a good place to catch bugs but it would help if it were warmer outside.

No luck in Winnipeg!

Thursday morning, the 6M class went to visit the trap for their first time. With a high of 8°C, we still didn’t have much luck catching anything. We are still hopeful that the sunshine will encourage the bugs to visit our trap. Here are a few messages from the students:

Today for the first time, my class went to see the trap. I personally think the trap is in a good place to catch bugs but it would help if it got warmer outside.
