Final Day!

The wind and cold are picking up as we sit in the grass writing our blog entry.  There is a good amount of bugs in the bottle.  We think that there are some male mosquitoes and lots of flies.  The tent is being dismantled as we write – we think this experiment was a huge success! – Nadine, Olivia, MackenzieIMG_4336IMG_4333IMG_4330

Weather damage to the Malaise Trap

It is a rainy day.  The wind and rain had caused the sign to fall on the ground.  The poles in our perimeter are falling over and the security tape had fallen off.  We resecured our trap and noticed that there were already 1.5 cm of bugs caught since attaching a new bottle yesterday. -Aliya, Alysha, Ethan, Chayton, Marielle

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Our Parade

We had the chance to attach a new ethanol bottle to the Malaise trap for a second week of insect collection.  Hopefully we’ll do as well or better for variety and numbers of bugs, but cooler temperatures might affect what we catch.  Weather conditions today were pretty much 100% cloud cover and light rain.  Winds were calm, but both the caution tape and sign were down, suggesting high winds over the weekend. -Sam, Samara and Sawyer

Lady Bugs on Day 3!

Today is a beautiful day.  It is nice and sunny with a little breeze.  Our Malaise Trap has been undisturbed so it is good to know that our location is secure.  We have collected about 1 cm of bugs so far.  We can see that many of them are ladybugs!  We can see ladybugs crawling on the trap as well. -Kiera, Laura, Erika and Abigail

Day 2 – Taking Observations!

Although it was damp and cloudy, our first check up on the Malaise trap was successful! We discovered that there were already some bugs in the trap and even as we were examining it, we observed that more bugs were attracted to the trap. We hope for another successful day of trapping tomorrow and are excited to see how the results vary with changes in weather and time! -Maryka, Joannie and Rebecca

Day 1 and Having Fun!

At Hamilton District Christian High school, our trap was set up along a wooded area, far from the sports fields and the road.  The group that suggested this site was in charge of today’s trap set up event.   We took a group photo and set up the security tape.  « It was really interesting and fun. » AP, RG, TT, JV
