This year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversity.uoguelph.ca\/\">Biodiversity Institute of Ontario&rsquo;s<\/a>\u00a0(BIO) Education &amp; Outreach Team will be in attendance and will be presenting two workshops regarding the <a href=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\">School Malaise Trap Program<\/a>\u00a0(Friday, Nov. 14th, 3:45-4:45pm &#8211; Session #2510)\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/discover\/dna-barcoding\/\">DNA Barcoding<\/a> applications for the classroom (Thursday, Nov. 13th, 8:30 &#8211; 9:30am &#8211; Session #1013). We are extremely excited to be able to participate and contribute to such a passionate community of STEM educators!<\/p>\n<p>This year&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/stao.ca\/conf2\/conference.php\">STAO conference<\/a> theme is \u00ab\u00a0inspiring innovation\u00a0\u00bb and was chosen in order to \u00ab\u00a0help science educators in Ontario better understand the significance of STEM education and how it can prepare students for a rapidly changing global world.\u00a0\u00bb We could not have said it better ourselves, as we too have a deep connection to these values!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/discover\/dna-barcoding\/\">DNA Barcoding<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/ibol.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1365 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/ibol2-1.gif\" alt=\"ibol2\" width=\"220\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a>, a genetic technique used to identify species, is a relatively new addition to the Ontario curriculum. Its applications are far reaching, and astounding initiatives have been created through utilizing this technology &#8211; most notably, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ibol.org\/about-us\/\">International Barcode of Life project (iBOL)<\/a>. This project is the largest biodiversity genomics initiative ever undertaken and aims to create a barcode reference library (<a href=\"http:\/\/boldsystems.org\/\">BOLD<\/a>) of all the species found on earth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1314\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lifescanner.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1314 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/LifeScanner-1-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"LifeScanner\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/LifeScanner-1-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/LifeScanner-1.jpg 503w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LifeScanner Kit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Feeling inspired and innovative yet? We thought so! The best part about the <a href=\"http:\/\/ibol.org\/about-us\/\">International Barcode of Life project<\/a> is that anyone can contribute to it, as well as access the data (found online at <a href=\"http:\/\/boldsystems.org\/\">BOLD<\/a>). Classroom projects and programs ranging from DIY lab studies, participating in the <a href=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/\">School Malaise Trap Program<\/a>, and submitting a <a href=\"http:\/\/lifescanner.net\/\">LifeScanner<\/a> kit for analysis are some of the many ways that students can\u00a0contribute valuable data to <a href=\"http:\/\/ibol.org\/about-us\/\">iBOL<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Through these innovative citizen science initiatives, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biodiversity.uoguelph.ca\/\">BIO<\/a> hopes to inspire students to contribute to, and prepare for, a bioliterate future. \u00a0Although we live in a fast-paced and rapidly changing world, <a href=\"http:\/\/malaiseprogram.com\/discover\/dna-barcoding\/\">DNA barcoding<\/a> is a key piece of technology that\u00a0will help us to slow down and truly assess, protect, and monitor all levels of biodiversity found around us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each year, the Science Teacher&rsquo;s Association of Ontario hosts an interactive and educational three day STEM conference in Toronto for elementary and secondary teachers from across Ontario.
