Rainy Day Malaise Trap
Today, the weather was very rainy, windy and cold. The trap was not standing as straight up as it used to be when it was set up (probably because of the wind). The catch volume on the ethanol bottle was just under 4.5, but it was hard to tell because the bottle was moving and the liquid was sloshing around. It’s a possibility that less bugs were caught because of the weather. Overall, it seems the weather had an impact on it. -Leah, Breanna and Katelyn
Week 2: Windy with Rain
We managed to miss the rain when we went out to make observations. We were lucky to have gone out when we did because right before and right after we went out, it was pouring. We were surprised by how many bugs were in the trap. There was one particularly large bug.

Group Entry, September 26
The day that we went out, it was raining rather hard, so moisture levels were high. The first thing we did was check the tent and the ethanol bottle. The amount of bugs was very limited. In fact, we saw almost NO bugs. Then, we took pictures of the trap and the surrounding area.

Start of Week 2
Today is the beginning of week 2. We have just replaced the bottle in the trap. The day is very miserable. It is raining lightly and overcast. The trap is under the tree which means it’s dry. More bugs might be caught because they will want to stay dry and go under the tree where the trap is. – Jamie, Sophie and Noelle
Malaise Trap, Week 2
We went out in light rain to attache the bottle with ethanol today. We took pictures and stared to head inside. We just made it in before it started to pour rain!

Looks like Rain
Looks like it might rain today, it is very overcast and a little chilly. Inside the trap, there are lots of bugs. The trap does not have any disturbances. I think today will be good because the bugs will be looking for a shelter and go to the trap and get caught.

Hot Days, Buggy Ways
Today is extremely hot!!! We think this will affect the outcome of our experiment in that less insects will be coming outside today. We also noticed that there are lots of flying ants in our trap…we wonder why? Other than that, the trap is unharmed.

We wonder whether weather affects bugs?
Today was windy, cold and cloudy. The trap had to be tied down better. But, what affect does this have on our catch? It is so cool to be part of a big project like this. -Nathan, Logan, Andrew and Cohen
Mid-Week Update!
We thought today’s cold, wet weather would scare our bugs away but they found refuge in our trap! It rained yesterday, and today’s high temperature is only 14C, with a low of 3C. There still seems to be plenty of bugs flying around under the flaps of our tent. Although, we do not see a huge variety of bugs in our bottle.
