week 2 summary
So we had cloudy weather for almost all of the week 2/extended week 1 including some stormy conditions (40-60 km winds for several of the days)… the weekend was sunny though!
Lots of small bugs in there (100’s) but no where near the 1line marker. The one very interesting thing is something that looks like a caterpillar and or a large larvae… will be interested to see what that comes out as … can’t quite figure how it got into the jar but once we know what it is, maybe its locomotion will be clearer…..
Anyway, that’s all from the north end of Haida Gwaii……
Found a bunch of ‘snailers’ on the school’s little skiff today…. get it?…. snails hiding on a boat…
Hooray for Week 3!
We are so excited to be collecting again. We can hardly wait until 11 when we go out to check the trap!
North Addington Education Centre
End of week two.
On Monday night we had very heavy winds and the trap blew down. Thankfully, we tied one of the guy lines to a large log so we didn’t lose the tent. The catch bottle became detached from the top bottle, however, we neglected to remove the inner seal so we didn’t lose anything as the small flies were trapped in the top bottle. We have had rain for the rest of the week so there hasn’t been much insect activity but the student’s are still eager to check the trap.
We are looking forward to a better week next week 🙂
Last day of extended week 1! Interesting find
Well we had such an exciting week. We must have close to 100 insects in our bottle. But the highlight was today when our teacher came to school, she brought this giant insect. it was in the back pick up of her truck. She lives 5 minutes away from school. The kids wanted to send it to BIO for identification. What a creepy insect. We have never seen this before!
This is an interesting find!! We will try to research its name this week.
