We set up our trap today. Check out our pics. Our local newspaper photographer was there to document the event too. We had the grade 1 and the grade 6 classes come to watch also.

A snowy start
![IMG_0426[1]](http://malaiseprogram.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/IMG_04261-1024x765.jpg)
Today we started the School Malaise Trap Program. We are from Landmark Manitoba. Landmark is a small town right in the middle of Canada. Our school has 250 people our town has 2300 people.
We put the trap in the back of the school by the soccer field. We put it in the back to keep it sheltered from the weather and from people. This morning we woke up with snow on the ground so we might not have many bugs for a couple of days.

Chedabucto Scenery
Here is a photo of the beautiful and snowy scenery here right by our school. This spot is where our trap will be located and where all the action will take place. We’re hoping the amount of trees here will attract some interesting bugs to share with you.

This is our Biology 11 class selfie. We’re standing on 3ft of snow, right where our trap will be. You can tell how excited we are for this big project by the smiles on all 29 of our faces (not even the whole class). The picture on the bottom is the class pretending we are bugs. We’re so pumped to start this project that we started BUGGING out in hopes to bring some goodluck our way.

« The bug bloggers » posing on the tent location. The snow has taken over our trap’s location, but hopefully it’ll melt. We’ll be ready though because we have our lab coats and goggles on, ready to get the job done. The snow isn’t bringing us down! We are ready to get down to business and to get to some serious bug hunting.

Collection Completed!
We really enjoyed this program. We especially enjoyed our second week. During the second week the sky was overcast and it rained periodically. During the second week we caught almost 3 times as much as during the first week. During the first week we only approached the first line of the bottle but during the second week we made it up to almost the third line. That helped us construct our own hypothesis about how the weather affects insect collection. We hope you enjoy our selfies and we look forward to the results!
Taking trap down @ JackChambers
Today we had to take our trap down today, in the rain…and the wind. The trap is wet so we have put it up in our class in order to let it dry over the weekend. Thank you so much for the bio bus tour! It was very interesting to hear the information that we did.. This was a great experience and it was a great way to introduce us to DNA barcoding! 🙂 On Monday, the trap will be sent back. We are very sad to see it go but are very excited to receive our results and see if we caught any new bugs!

St. Paul’s Malaise Trap
This is our blog update on our Malaise trap. Our catch volume is about 3 and we are on week 2. It was a bit cold when we checked the trap. Our trap will be picked up on Friday.

SCC #SMTPSELFIE

Today Emma, Meagan, and Paige checked the insect trap. We discovered 8 bugs. There were 5 mosquitoes, 1 crane fly, and 1 horse fly. It was very cloudy and humid outside. We finally got to check the trap because the clown boys always beat us to it when asking to check the trap!
Jack Chambers PS – #SMTPselfie!
Jack Chambers PS has sent us a #SMTPselfie! Great Picture!

St. Charles College #SMTPselfies!

Well, here it is week 2 and we are off to a less than auspicious start…a cranefly as of this morning. But of course, the weather is also less than stellar, cold wet and drizzly. The insects aren’t the only ones who want to stay sheltered in this weather…everybody wanted to get back into the school as quickly as possible.
