50 at the end of Week 1

As the first week ends, Mrs. Rose-Wideman’s class at St. Ignatius of Loyola is excited to report that 50 insects have been collected. New additions include: a cricket, a large grasshopper, spiders, and more black flies. We look forward to seeing what we will catch next week.

St. Paul’s Malaise Trap

Hello BIO friends! Geramy, Liam, and David here with an update on our Malaise Trap. Our catch volume for week 1 is near level 3.  Since we have set up the Malaise Trap on Monday, we have checked the catch volume and the weather every single day. On Monday our class is going to virtually meet a biologist, who works on the BIObus. Our class is very excited about week 2!

Oops…the boys forgot to attach their pictures to the previous post…

Having fun while checking the traps, the boys wanted a picture included in their post, but forgot to do so.  Sooo…I am putting it here.

In terms of the trap, it is a nice day outside and the boys assure me that we have quite a few insects in the trap.  Level wise, we are still around 1.  I removed the Week 1 collection bottle and had a look inside.  In terms of interesting specimens, could see some caddis flies, at least one syrphid fly, and a few solitary wasps.
