It was a rainy week for us, however it looks like we a little bit more successful this week than last. We are estimating we collected over 200 insects this week.

The Final Countdown!
It’s the final day of the Malaise Trap Program! It is quite windy, and somewhat cloudy. The trap is sagging. In the upper part of the bottle trap, there is an enormous spider! -Ethan, Brody, Tristan and Noah

Rainy Day Malaise Trap
Today, the weather was very rainy, windy and cold. The trap was not standing as straight up as it used to be when it was set up (probably because of the wind). The catch volume on the ethanol bottle was just under 4.5, but it was hard to tell because the bottle was moving and the liquid was sloshing around. It’s a possibility that less bugs were caught because of the weather. Overall, it seems the weather had an impact on it. -Leah, Breanna and Katelyn

Week 2: Windy with Rain
We managed to miss the rain when we went out to make observations. We were lucky to have gone out when we did because right before and right after we went out, it was pouring. We were surprised by how many bugs were in the trap. There was one particularly large bug.

A very blustery day on Tuesday
I’m glad I checked the trap when I did; otherwise I would have been looking at a kite instead! Not nearly as many specimens in the jar as last Tuesday. Sounds like we’re not the only ones experiencing low numbers this week. It’ll be interesting to see what effect the rain will have.
Death for DNA
This week there were not a lot of insects in the container. The bugs that were in there were very small. We think that the Malaise Trap is a very interesting experiment and are excited to be participating in it. We do feel that it is not entirely accurate because the results will vary depending on the placement and weather.

Week 2, Day 2
Today we saw that the trap is still undisturbed and a wide variety of insects have fallen into the trap even though it is only the second day. We were even lucky enough to see a bug fall into the trap!
– Ezra, Emma and Kali

Emma made sure the sign was obeyed and no one disturbed the trap.
Group Entry, September 26
The day that we went out, it was raining rather hard, so moisture levels were high. The first thing we did was check the tent and the ethanol bottle. The amount of bugs was very limited. In fact, we saw almost NO bugs. Then, we took pictures of the trap and the surrounding area.

Week Two Starts off Gloomy!
The weather for our first day of week two saw us go out with umbrellas. The temperature has definately dropped and it’s feeling a lot like fall. 16 degrees, 74% humidity, 100% cloud cover. It was raining so hard we didn’t take out our camera! Interested to see what impact that may have on our catch rate for tomorrow!!
Happy Trapping!
