Announcing the Spring 2015 #SMTPselfie Winners!

LifeScannerWe are pleased to announce the winners of our #SMTPselfie contest! Thank you to all who entered, we had some great pictures this program! The winners for the #SMTPselfie contest will receive a Life Scanner Kit  which will essentially allow them to DNA barcode 4 organisms of their choice and find out what species they are! Currently these kits are being offered for free + shipping online at the above mentioned link, so be sure to sign your class up for one!

Petri the Green Cheek Conure (Pyrrhura molinae) and the Grade 11’s @ John Polanyi CI want to thank BIO for the great opportunity to study the arthropod diversity on our school grounds. Though we are sad to see the trap go, we are excited to get the results in a few short weeks.

Trap was fairly easy to set up, but we unfortunately forgot a hammer so we had to use a rock to stick the pegs in! We ventured into a trail behind the school and set up our trap. The first day we got 1 bug, and on the second day, we found that there were approximately 3-4 bugs. It’s a bit too cold to catch many flying insects this time of year.

Ready, set, trap!

The 6S class went out Thursday morning to set the trap and have it ready to catch Monday morning. Here is a picture of the class, proudly showing off their trap and here’s what they had to say about it:

Today we set up our trap. It was really fun and we all got to put a peg into the ground. It was really fun to take silly pictures to post on the blog. It was also very nice of BIO to throw in a few little things like little pins, bookmarks, pencils, erasers and a bag.

I was happy when we put the trap up this morning because I’m so excited for this project. It was fun to put up the trap because my whole class worked as a team and we got to go outside to put the trap up. I think we put the trap in a good spot because it is in a garden so the flies might be more attracted to it.

This morning, we set up the Malaise trap in the garden of the daycare yard. I think we are going to catch lots of bugs because we put the trap in the garden.

HI! Manitoba is a lovely place! I hope we find weird and cool insects! We already put up our trap. I was really fun. We took some funny pictures! We put our trap close to a tree so maybe the insects from the tree will go in it. I wonder if we can name any new insects we might find…

Don’t touch!

Some people just don’t have any respect for Science! Over the weekend some people tampered with our trap. They ripped pegs out of the ground and the back was leaning a bit. The caution tape was also ripped off, but the damage was minor and some of us went over and fixed it over the weekend.

Today we attached the collection vessel, so now we’re ready to go. We’re excited to watch over it for the next couple of weeks. We hope to catch lots of cool insects!
