CMS – Week 2 – Day One – April 27th, 2015 Tent Building

So today our group set up the Malaise trap.

No one knew how to set up a tent.
So it was a mess. It didn’t help that it was raining harder than Hurricane Katrina, so we’re all arguing how to set up the tent while while water was falling from the sky. Sebastian, Asher, David, Bennet, and Ryan set up the tent, while Alex (Me) and April were watching them in case something wasn’t going right.

Alex and April were the only people who knew how to set up the tent, but they weren’t allowed to help set up unless people needed help (They did anyways). But in the end it worked out… The tent was finally built (Again), we were completely soaked, and my voice was gone from yelling at everyone on how to build the tent.

It was a great day!

It’s too cold and rainy in Toronto

Our poor teacher has been setting up the trap in the terrible weather. I am so desperately sad that I couldn’t set up the trap with the teacher. We were looking forward for this exciting opportunity, but sadly we missed it. Even though we were not able to be « mini scientists » yet, we’re all looking forward to getting out and observing the trap in action. -Anushey

Monday, April 20th,2015 Day 1: Set up The Trap

We are Iona Academy situated in the st. Raphael’s area of Eastern Ontario. Today we set up our Malaise Trap! We had a few minor setbacks because it was raining while we were setting up. The location we chose to set up was in an open field along the forest edge.  It was also near a pond, so we could attract insects from the water, field and forest. It was a very chilly day as it was only 12 degrees Celsius, so not many insects were caught. We hope the weather clears up because we are very excited to be part of this project and hope to catch more insects!–grade 7 studentsIMG_2352 IMG_2353 IMG_2355

Hello From ERMES (Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School)

Grade 6 malaise pic

We are very excited to be participating in the School Malaise Trap Program for 2015! We have a total of 51 Science students from grades 4 to 6 and we will all be observing our trap. It was a pretty nice day to set the trap; however, we had LOTS of rain and wind overnight, so our trap needs to be fixed up because the weather has tampered with it a bit 🙂 Looking forward to see how many insects we can catch, and more importantly, WHICH kinds of insects live in our coastal community! 🙂

SLKCS is ready to go!

All of us, in our grade 4-6 class, at Slave Lake Koinonia (pronounced Koi – nuh- knee – ah) Christian School are very excited to be a part of this project. It was a balmy 9 degrees today. We are located in Northern Alberta (3 hours North of Edmonton). We didn’t feel our play ground was large enough for the trap so our teacher let us keep it at their house. We walked over to our teacher’s house to see what all of this was about! Thank goodness it wasn’t raining! 20150420_144714 (1)

Ready, set, trap!

The 6S class went out Thursday morning to set the trap and have it ready to catch Monday morning. Here is a picture of the class, proudly showing off their trap and here’s what they had to say about it:

Today we set up our trap. It was really fun and we all got to put a peg into the ground. It was really fun to take silly pictures to post on the blog. It was also very nice of BIO to throw in a few little things like little pins, bookmarks, pencils, erasers and a bag.

I was happy when we put the trap up this morning because I’m so excited for this project. It was fun to put up the trap because my whole class worked as a team and we got to go outside to put the trap up. I think we put the trap in a good spot because it is in a garden so the flies might be more attracted to it.

This morning, we set up the Malaise trap in the garden of the daycare yard. I think we are going to catch lots of bugs because we put the trap in the garden.

HI! Manitoba is a lovely place! I hope we find weird and cool insects! We already put up our trap. I was really fun. We took some funny pictures! We put our trap close to a tree so maybe the insects from the tree will go in it. I wonder if we can name any new insects we might find…

Today, marks DAY 1 of our School Malaise Trap Program. Our team worked together to get the trap deployed.  We  observed the process  and gathered data.

We look forward to getting in touch with other schools over these next few weeks. Our first contact has been @LuckyLake.  We will be looking you up on the map. Do you have a twitter account (@susanmuir70 ) we can follow? Thank you, and we look forward to seeing pics and hearing about your temperature for the day.

Our Mathematician would like to collect the  high temperatures for Saskatchewan and maybe even all of Canada.

It would be great if you COMMENTED to this post leaving your LOCATION and HIGH temp for today! Thank you!!! Our mathematician is looking forward to analyzing the data.

Where will the trap go?

In order to decide where our trap would be set up, we asked each class involved to submit three suitable locations. Then, we compiled the suggestions. Due to common ideas, we had a selection of 5 different locations. We then created ballots and had each grade involved vote for the best location.

Above is a map of our school property and the five locations are indicated by color-coded sticky notes.

We collected the ballots and created a bar graph. Each class had a different coloured ballot. The location decided upon was the the football field.
