Time to Trap!

This is a small portion of the class that got to set up the trap this week! We worked very efficiently when setting up because we were all so excited to take part, and wasted no time to catch some exciting bugs!

Its off to work we go!
Its off to work we go!

Working hard or hardly working? I can say we did both. We had some laughs even though it was cold out and everyone was excited to get see the final product.

The picture on the left is a student with a bug that we found in our tent. In the picture on the right was later that day after set up we already found some bugs that we caught. You can say we’re off to a good start! InstaSize_2015_3 _ 20533

These are the hard workers of the day with the beautiful final product of the malaise trap. Us posing with our tools. Can’t wait to receive new discoveries on collecting different bugs in the near future:)

Trap is ready to go!

We set up our trap last Friday with the Grade 3/4 class and talked about how it works. We estimated that there would be between 100 and 150 different types of insects found in our traps.

On Monday we installed the bottle in the trap and tightened the pegs as it was very (very, very) windy over the weekend.  We checked it with the grade 5 class during outdoor education in the afternoon. The temperature was about 16 degrees and there was 90% cloud cover…so it felt a bit chilly! We were surprised with how many insects we had caught already!

Hello From ERMES (Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School)

Grade 6 malaise pic

We are very excited to be participating in the School Malaise Trap Program for 2015! We have a total of 51 Science students from grades 4 to 6 and we will all be observing our trap. It was a pretty nice day to set the trap; however, we had LOTS of rain and wind overnight, so our trap needs to be fixed up because the weather has tampered with it a bit 🙂 Looking forward to see how many insects we can catch, and more importantly, WHICH kinds of insects live in our coastal community! 🙂

SLKCS is ready to go!

All of us, in our grade 4-6 class, at Slave Lake Koinonia (pronounced Koi – nuh- knee – ah) Christian School are very excited to be a part of this project. It was a balmy 9 degrees today. We are located in Northern Alberta (3 hours North of Edmonton). We didn’t feel our play ground was large enough for the trap so our teacher let us keep it at their house. We walked over to our teacher’s house to see what all of this was about! Thank goodness it wasn’t raining! 20150420_144714 (1)

Ready, set, trap!

The 6S class went out Thursday morning to set the trap and have it ready to catch Monday morning. Here is a picture of the class, proudly showing off their trap and here’s what they had to say about it:

Today we set up our trap. It was really fun and we all got to put a peg into the ground. It was really fun to take silly pictures to post on the blog. It was also very nice of BIO to throw in a few little things like little pins, bookmarks, pencils, erasers and a bag.

I was happy when we put the trap up this morning because I’m so excited for this project. It was fun to put up the trap because my whole class worked as a team and we got to go outside to put the trap up. I think we put the trap in a good spot because it is in a garden so the flies might be more attracted to it.

This morning, we set up the Malaise trap in the garden of the daycare yard. I think we are going to catch lots of bugs because we put the trap in the garden.

HI! Manitoba is a lovely place! I hope we find weird and cool insects! We already put up our trap. I was really fun. We took some funny pictures! We put our trap close to a tree so maybe the insects from the tree will go in it. I wonder if we can name any new insects we might find…
