This day in particular was very wet and cold ,
there weren’t very many flying bugs outside besides
the earth worms that stay close to cracks in
the side walks or very wet areas.

Notes(Trap Disturbances)
Raining and wet / cold weather /very little bugs outside and or around the trap.
Well the weather has not been ideal the past two days. As a class we set up our trap early yesterday morning. By the afternoon we had already collected one insect! It was windy towards the end of the day and today we have been under a rain warning. The students have been very receptive to the project and have taken it very seriously. We ventured out in the rain an noticed a large change in numbers. We are hoping to continue to see a large increase as the days go on!

This is a small portion of the class that got to set up the trap this week! We worked very efficiently when setting up because we were all so excited to take part, and wasted no time to catch some exciting bugs!

Working hard or hardly working? I can say we did both. We had some laughs even though it was cold out and everyone was excited to get see the final product.

The picture on the left is a student with a bug that we found in our tent. In the picture on the right was later that day after set up we already found some bugs that we caught. You can say we’re off to a good start!
These are the hard workers of the day with the beautiful final product of the malaise trap. Us posing with our tools. Can’t wait to receive new discoveries on collecting different bugs in the near future:)

We caught the “Hannah” and “Celina” bug!

Wait! We caught a lot more bugs at the trap… a whole tent full of them!

We caught 3 mosquitoes and 1 beetle. What an amazing catch!

We set up our trap last Friday with the Grade 3/4 class and talked about how it works. We estimated that there would be between 100 and 150 different types of insects found in our traps.
On Monday we installed the bottle in the trap and tightened the pegs as it was very (very, very) windy over the weekend. We checked it with the grade 5 class during outdoor education in the afternoon. The temperature was about 16 degrees and there was 90% cloud cover…so it felt a bit chilly! We were surprised with how many insects we had caught already!

It is cool, but we still managed to catch a few bugs. Our trap is in an aspen grove not far from the school. We set the trap beside a small slough – perhaps we will catch some bugs emerging from the slough.

We are very excited to be participating in the School Malaise Trap Program for 2015! We have a total of 51 Science students from grades 4 to 6 and we will all be observing our trap. It was a pretty nice day to set the trap; however, we had LOTS of rain and wind overnight, so our trap needs to be fixed up because the weather has tampered with it a bit 🙂 Looking forward to see how many insects we can catch, and more importantly, WHICH kinds of insects live in our coastal community! 🙂

We started the experience this morning. We are very excited to see what will happen each day. This is truly a fantastic experience.

It didn’t take long for the insects to get trapped! After only a few short minutes, the trap had collected a few insects. Excitement prevails! Can’t wait to see how many insects are in the trap tomorrow morning!!
