What a great day at Cyril Varney Public School in Sudbury, Ontario

Hi everyone,

The Grade 2/3 class at Cyril Varney Public School in Sudbury, Ontario is excited to be a part of the Malaise Trap Program.  We started off our day today by exploring all the living things in our school yard and then after about an hour, the students captured over 8 different types of insects.  Shortly after their discoveries, we had a couple of the grade 6’s help put up the tent. They had fun too!  The kids were so intrigued that they were going to spend the weekend looking for bugs in their own backyard.  Many of them said they wanted to bring them in on Monday to show the class.  We look forward to reading blogs from other schools!

All set to go at Riverwood!

This morning at The Riverwood Conservancy, elementary instructor Alison, and teaching intern Theresa set up the Malaise Trap near the historic Chappell House. The chosen site is surrounded by forsythia, oak, beech, pine, and a beautiful Carolinian garden. We are excited to get the jar set up next week and see what we catch!

Yesterday we looked for a good location for our Malaise Trap.  We found a good location at the corner of the soccer field.  We thought this was the best location because there are trees nearby, it is a fenced area, the grass is short, it is an area that gets a lot of sun, there are flowers nearby, and it is on level ground.  We noticed that there are a lot of bugs/insects in the area already.

Today we practiced putting up the Malaise Trap.   We feel that this was a good team-building exercise.  On Monday we should be able to set the trap up pretty easily.

Trap Deployment Reminder!

Hello #bioSMTP participants!

We are approaching trap deployment; Sept. 21st is just around the corner! Please remember to set up your trap and have the first collection bottle ready to go on Monday morning (Sept. 21). We encourage you to set up your trap tomorrow so that come Monday morning, all you will have to do is screw in the week 1 bottle and make trap observations (store bottle lid in a place you will remember!).

Report Catch Volume
Recall that we ask you to let us know at the end of the first week how your trap is doing. We will send out another reminder, but please send us an email indicating your catch volume on Friday, Sept. 26th.

Collection Bottle Send-off
Please have your collection bottles and Malaise trap packed and ready to be sent via FedEx on Monday, Oct. 5th. Please arrange a package pick-up time with FedEx for this date. Further details will follow.

Don’t forget to keep up the great blogging work! We encourage you and your class to take a picture with your Malaise trap (#SMTPselfie) once it has been set up as well as tell us about your schoolyard habitats. Please feel free to blog, tweet, or add these pictures/comments to our FaceBook page.

T Minus 6 Days – Preeceville School’s Biology 30 Checking In!

Hello everyone!

Ever since our Malaise trap parcel arrived on September 9th, we have been really excited to start this project!

This week (September 14-17th), we have been learning about scientific classification of living beings in Biology 30 so that we can classify some of the critters that we catch during our time with this project.

Preeceville is located in east central Saskatchewan, one hour north of Yorkton (hello M.C. Knoll!!).  We are very fortunate to be in an area that is very biologically diverse.  Our town is in a parkland transition between the boreal forest and the prairie.  Our nearby lakes are « pit stops » for many migratory bird species.

We are planning to deploy our Malaise trap on the southern shore of Annie Laurie Lake near the bird trails and beach which are marked in light yellow on the map below.  This is about a ten minute walk from our school.

Permission has been received by our town to place the trap on town land.  We will be choosing a place off the trails in the bush so that it is out of the way.
