We are very excited to be participating in the School Malaise Trap Program for 2015! We have a total of 51 Science students from grades 4 to 6 and we will all be observing our trap. It was a pretty nice day to set the trap; however, we had LOTS of rain and wind overnight, so our trap needs to be fixed up because the weather has tampered with it a bit 🙂 Looking forward to see how many insects we can catch, and more importantly, WHICH kinds of insects live in our coastal community! 🙂

We started the experience this morning. We are very excited to see what will happen each day. This is truly a fantastic experience.
It didn’t take long for the insects to get trapped! After only a few short minutes, the trap had collected a few insects. Excitement prevails! Can’t wait to see how many insects are in the trap tomorrow morning!!
All of us, in our grade 4-6 class, at Slave Lake Koinonia (pronounced Koi – nuh- knee – ah) Christian School are very excited to be a part of this project. It was a balmy 9 degrees today. We are located in Northern Alberta (3 hours North of Edmonton). We didn’t feel our play ground was large enough for the trap so our teacher let us keep it at their house. We walked over to our teacher’s house to see what all of this was about! Thank goodness it wasn’t raining! 
I’m Alyssa. I’m in grade 10 and I’m very happy to enjoy this experiment. This morning we fixed our bottle to the trap. Everybody is excited to see what going to happen tomorrow.
The 6S class went out Thursday morning to set the trap and have it ready to catch Monday morning. Here is a picture of the class, proudly showing off their trap and here’s what they had to say about it:
Today we set up our trap. It was really fun and we all got to put a peg into the ground. It was really fun to take silly pictures to post on the blog. It was also very nice of BIO to throw in a few little things like little pins, bookmarks, pencils, erasers and a bag.

I was happy when we put the trap up this morning because I’m so excited for this project. It was fun to put up the trap because my whole class worked as a team and we got to go outside to put the trap up. I think we put the trap in a good spot because it is in a garden so the flies might be more attracted to it.

HI! Manitoba is a lovely place! I hope we find weird and cool insects! We already put up our trap. I was really fun. We took some funny pictures! We put our trap close to a tree so maybe the insects from the tree will go in it. I wonder if we can name any new insects we might find…

Today, marks DAY 1 of our School Malaise Trap Program. Our team worked together to get the trap deployed. We observed the process and gathered data.

Some people just don’t have any respect for Science! Over the weekend some people tampered with our trap. They ripped pegs out of the ground and the back was leaning a bit. The caution tape was also ripped off, but the damage was minor and some of us went over and fixed it over the weekend.
Today we attached the collection vessel, so now we’re ready to go. We’re excited to watch over it for the next couple of weeks. We hope to catch lots of cool insects!
