Monday, April 20th,2015 Day 1: Set up The Trap

We are Iona Academy situated in the st. Raphael’s area of Eastern Ontario. Today we set up our Malaise Trap! We had a few minor setbacks because it was raining while we were setting up. The location we chose to set up was in an open field along the forest edge.  It was also near a pond, so we could attract insects from the water, field and forest. It was a very chilly day as it was only 12 degrees Celsius, so not many insects were caught. We hope the weather clears up because we are very excited to be part of this project and hope to catch more insects!–grade 7 studentsIMG_2352 IMG_2353 IMG_2355

Malaise Trap

Well the weather has not been ideal the past two days. As a class we set up our trap early yesterday morning. By the afternoon we had already collected one insect! It was windy towards the end of the day and today we have been under a rain warning. The students have been very receptive to the project and have taken it very seriously. We ventured out in the rain an noticed a large change in numbers. We are hoping to continue to see a large increase as the days go on!

Trap is ready to go!

We set up our trap last Friday with the Grade 3/4 class and talked about how it works. We estimated that there would be between 100 and 150 different types of insects found in our traps.

On Monday we installed the bottle in the trap and tightened the pegs as it was very (very, very) windy over the weekend.  We checked it with the grade 5 class during outdoor education in the afternoon. The temperature was about 16 degrees and there was 90% cloud cover…so it felt a bit chilly! We were surprised with how many insects we had caught already!

Hello From ERMES (Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School)

Grade 6 malaise pic

We are very excited to be participating in the School Malaise Trap Program for 2015! We have a total of 51 Science students from grades 4 to 6 and we will all be observing our trap. It was a pretty nice day to set the trap; however, we had LOTS of rain and wind overnight, so our trap needs to be fixed up because the weather has tampered with it a bit 🙂 Looking forward to see how many insects we can catch, and more importantly, WHICH kinds of insects live in our coastal community! 🙂
